HENNIKER, NH: Lester Leon Durgin, Jr., born on February 23, 1945, in Concord, NH, left us on August 18, 2023, after sustaining serious injuries from a fall. Lester is predeceased by his parents, Lester Leon Durgin, Sr. and Ursol (Meade) Durgin and his son, Russell Meade Durgin, who bravely served in the US Army, and is forever remembered after giving his life on June 13, 2006, in Korengal Province, Afghanistan.
Lester's legacy lives on through his surviving family members. He leaves behind his sisters, Lavonda “Bonnie” Kennedy and her husband Jerry of Henniker and Ursula Rocheleau of Champlain, NY, his brothers, Michael Durgin of South Berwick, ME, and Franklin Durgin of Henniker, NH. He is survived by his sons, Keith Durgin of Concord, NH, and Sean Durgin and his wife, Heather of North East, MD. His pride and joy were his cherished grandchildren, Jennie, Aaron, Hailey, Jonah and Evan and many nieces and nephews and his longtime partner, Patricia Keane.
After graduating from high school in 1963, he embarked on a path of service and duty by joining the United States Marines. His aptitude for auto mechanics kept him behind the scenes during the Vietnam War, where he worked in the motor pool. After serving honorably for four years, Lester returned to his home in New Hampshire, but the Marine in him persisted his entire life.
In a twist of fate, a motorcycle accident tragically took his left arm. He then purchased his beloved 1970 Mack dump truck, which marked the beginning of a new chapter. For over 30 years, Lester was a stalwart presence in the heavy equipment business. He worked as an owner operator, hauling aggregate most of the year and plowing the interstate in the winter. Lester enjoyed bringing his antique trucks to shows across New England. Among his friends and peers, he became affectionately known as "Diesel" and "Maxi," reflective of his deep-rooted affection for Mack trucks.
Lester's absence will be deeply felt by his family, friends and community.
